Preventive Care

What is Preventive Care?

Preventive care within dentistry at Aliso Niguel Dental Group stresses on the importance of undergoing dental hygiene procedures and daily hygienic routines at home to prevent tooth decay and onset of other dental conditions, such as, periodontal gum disease.  In order to receive effective preventive care, patients can benefit from dental professionals at Aliso Niguel who specialize in educating patients about practicing at home-oral care combined with regular dental visits.
At our practice, we recommend patients to undergo a minimum of two dental check-up at least within one year to acquire professional cleaning and treatment to protect the teeth and smile from early onset of any dental complications, thus limiting expenses from undergoing treatment for long-term dental issues due to a patients lack of preventive care.

What are the Preventive Dentistry Strategies recommended by Aliso Niguel Dental Group?

At Aliso Niguel Dental Group, we are highly committed in educating both children and adults about the potential benefits of practicing preventive care and the possible consequences if not taken care of.
A number of in-office and at-home preventive strategies include;

  • Regular Dental Visits: scheduling regular dental check-ups every six months can decrease your chances of developing and oral diseases. During a dental visit at Aliso Niguel Dental Group, dentists perform oral cancer screenings to detect any abnormalities in the tissues. Dental x-rays are also taken to help dentists identify underlying dental issues that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as, tooth decay, cavities and problems below the gum line. We also recommend professional dental cleaning every six months for removal of dental plaque and stains that cannot be removed at home. Removal of dental plaque is necessary to avoid production of dental tartar which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
  • At-home oral-care: brushing and flossing teeth twice a day or after every meal helps reduce the likelihood of dental plaque forming. We recommend patients use toothpaste containing fluoride since fluoride strengthens teeth and prevents tooth decay. Oral care can significantly help ensure a lifetime of good dental health.
  • Diet: instilling a balanced diet promotes dental health. Foods containing only sugar and carbohydrates can cause an increase in the production of bacteria producing dental plaque while foods low in calcium can increase the chances of developing periodontal gum disease.
    Smoking and alcohol consumption can also affect dental health where development of tooth discoloration, dental plaque, gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancer are common.
